Course Description: We will look at different genres of literature, such as the short story, the novel, epic, drama, and poetry. As you read different pieces of literature, you will build upon your writing and grammatical skills, enhance your vocabulary, and explore the world and yourselves.
Accomplishing this will require cooperation, an open mind, and strong work ethic.
Think of my class like a sport such as football or track. You will have to work hard independently, but you will also have to work effectively with other students. You will have to listen to your coach (me) and practice, practice, practice to be a winner!
Guidelines for Success: Winners make their own luck. They have PRIDE!
Preparation
Responsibility
Integrity
Dedication
Effort
Classroom Rules: Winners know the rules and follow them.
1. Come to class on time everyday you’re not sick.
2. Be prepared! Bring a writing utensil, notebook, homework, and any other requested material.
3. Remember the three R’s at all times.
· Respect
· Restraint
· Responsibility.
4. Follow directions the first time
5. Stay on task during all working times
Grades: Winners know that you have to keep score.
I will keep you updated on your progress but you are responsible for keeping track of your own grades too. I will give you a simple ‘Grade Tracking Sheet’ which will allow you to know your grade at any given time. Your grades are calculated by a “Total Point System”-all graded work has a certain point value.
Homework = 10
Quizzes = 30
Test/Projects/Essays = 50
Class Assignments = 20
Weekly Participation = 20 (5 pts a day)
There will be a chance for extra credit points throughout the year
All graded work should immediately be copied into your ‘Grade Tracking Sheet’ so you can easily figure out your grade. Your grade is calculated by adding total points earned and dividing by the total points possible.
Example: Points you earned: 8+13+87+25+7+5+40 = 185
Points possible: 10+15+100+30+10+5+50 = 220 185/220 = 84%
Homework: Homework is due when it is due. Late Homework is not accepted!! It must be with you in class and not in your locker. All homework assignments will be posted daily. If it is written on the board it is expected to be completed, even if I don’t mention it verbally. I will also post homework on my webpage at http://www.bloust.com/haussling

Entering the Class:
- Be in the room before the bell rings.
- Have homework out and materials for class accessible. You will not be allowed to go to locker.
- Start Do Now assignment on board.
- Quietly work on assignment until I signal your attention.
Tardy to Class: Please be on time to class. You are considered late if you are not in your seat working on the do now when the bell rings. If you are held up by another teacher please obtain a pass from that teacher. The first two times late are warnings and the third is a detention. Excessive lateness will result in a referral to the front office.

You are not sleeping, talking out of turn, daydreaming, or being a distraction. If you come unprepared I will lend you an item, but you will loose points. All items must be returned at the end of class.
Absences: If you miss school, you are responsible for all missed work. I will not hunt you down or constantly remind you to make up work. If work is not made up a week before the marking period ends you will receive a zero for the missing assignments.
Bathroom Passes: You will only receive 2 passes per week to use for emergency use only. Try to go to the bathroom before class. Your agenda will be signed each time I write you a pass. No agenda = No Pass (No exceptions)
